What I Learnt from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Stephen R. Covey’s book helped me think about effectiveness as something rooted in character, principles, and repeated choices rather than short bursts of motivation.
Why this book stayed with me
This is one of the books that shaped how I approach personal and professional growth. When I joined Amazon, I was going through a major mindset shift and a difficult initial period. The book gave me a useful way to slow down, look at my own choices, and focus on the parts of life and work I could actually influence.
The main lesson
The biggest idea I took from the book is that effectiveness starts before the visible work. It begins with how we choose our response, how clearly we understand what matters, and how consistently we align daily actions with long-term values.
Notes I keep returning to
- Be proactive instead of letting circumstances set the tone for every decision.
- Start with a clear sense of direction before getting lost in activity.
- Prioritize important work before urgent work consumes the day.
- Build relationships through trust, listening, and mutual benefit.
- Keep learning and renewing the systems that support good work.
How it changed my thinking
The book made me more aware of the gap between being busy and being effective. It pushed me to think in systems: habits, attention, relationships, health, and long-term direction. I still come back to those ideas when I need clarity during a demanding season.
